Each year Women in Economics Initiative generates the WiE Index, which records and monitors the presence of women economists in academia, government, and the private sector. The WiE Index is on a 0-100 scale, with 0 representing complete disparity and 100 representing complete parity. For the academic sector, the Index includes data about the percentage of women as top authors, in top economics departments, and as leaders of think tanks. The WiE Index for the academic sector for 2021 was 31, indicating significant disparity. The WiE Index for the academic sector was also 31 in 2020. For the private sector, the Index is constructed using data about the percentage of women who are the chief economists of the world’s largest companies, leading banks, and top insurance companies. The WiE Index for the private sector in 2021 was 34, which is a decrease from the Indices in 2019 and 2020, which were both 35. For the public sector, the Index measures the presence of women who are governors of central banks, finance ministers, economic expert advisors, and chief economists of international institutions. The WiE Index for the public sector in 2021 was 38, which is the same as 2020. The 2021 WiE Index reveals significant and persistent gender disparity in the field of economics. In addition to computing this Index in future years, the Women in Economics Initiative will also strive to inform the public about the gender disparities in economics, provide networking opportunities for young female economists, and offer platforms for females in the field to share their stories.
