Despite knowledge of minority underrepresentation in economics for many decades, the field has failed to see much improvement across the academic, business and public sectors. In this online panel discussion, Bomi Okuyiga (UK Cabinet Office, board member of The Black Economist Network), Surbhi Kesar (Azim Premji University, Steering Group member of the Diversifying and Decolonising Economics Initiative) and Elisabeth ‘Bitsy’ Perlman (US Census Bureau, founding member of the American Economic Association’s Committee on LGBTQ+ Individuals) will talk about minorities in economics and the specific challenges and obstacles they face e.g. due to their ethnic/religious backgrounds or sexual orientation, both in general and for female economists from minority groups in particular.

During the event, we will jointly explore some of the root causes for minority misrepresentation in economics, how these can vary across countries and continents, what should be and is already being done to work towards more inclusion and diversity…and most importantly, what we can do!
