Virginia Sondergeld
Chair of the Board

Virginia leads WiE’s strategic and organisational development. She is responsible for guiding new ideas and activities, coordination of organisational processes and expansion as well as monitoring WiE's mission and impact. Virginia is a PhD candidate at the Berlin School of Economics and DIW Berlin since 2019. Her research interests are labour and gender. She gained 3y of experience in economic consulting as an Economic Analyst at NERA. In her free time, Virginia enjoys electronic music, playing the piano, yoga and drinking a well-done cosmopolitan.

Eva Schönwald
Vice Chair of the Board

Eva works on the strategic direction of WiE. Additionally, as the Head of Strategic Partnerships, she works on building partnerships with like-minded organisations to help grow WiE's community. As a quantitative researcher, Eva's work focuses on evidence-based policymaking and evaluating social care and education programmes. Her research interests include inequality and development economics. Eva spends most of her free time on basketball courts or learning new languages.

Iakov Frizis
Chief Editor

Iakov is responsible for planning, coordinating and editing, WiE outputs and communications. He is currently working for PwC Luxembourg as a Public Sector Senior Associate focusing on impact evaluation and the use of quantitative analysis techniques. Iakov is also an external expert for the Center for Social and Economic Research in Warsaw, where his main contributions are in the fields of institutional, fiscal, gender economics. Iakov spends his free time playing football and doing scuba diving.

Jess Palka
Chief Editor

Jess is a chief editor at WiE, coordinating the writing and editing team to create engaging opinion pieces, interviews, event wrap-ups and website material. She is a PhD candidate at the Institute of Socioeconomics, and a researcher for the Gerhard Mercator Graduate College for Open-Mindedness, Tolerance and Public Engagement at the University of Duisburg-Essen. Her research focuses on exploring social innovation, civic engagement and the social economy in Duisburg using participatory action research methods. In her free time, Jess enjoys talking with friends and family, practising yoga and tai chi, playing video games, cooking, and gardening.

Larissa Fuchs
Head of Finance & Funds

Larissa is the head of Finance at WiE and a PhD researcher at the University of Cologne. Besides her responsibility of WiE's financial management - she is also involved in events and cooperation with Cologne’s Excellence Cluster ECONtribute. Her research interests include algorithmic fairness in recruiting processes together with candidate select in the FAIR project, human capital and labor market related topics. In her free time she loves to sail, do some yoga or enjoy a Sundowner on her balcony with her friends including a lovely view on the Kölner Dom.

Philip Hanspach
Head of Research

Philip is the head of research at WiE and a PhD researcher at the European University Institute in Florence. He works with the research team at WiE to update and improve upon the Women in Economics Index to monitor the role women economists play in leadership positions in academia, the private and public sector. He worked at NERA Economic Consulting's European Competition Team in Berlin for two years. His professional interests include industrial organisation, empirical methods and competition policy. In particular, he is interested in innovation and market entry, antitrust enforcement and industrial policy.

Yun Ma
Head of Marketing

Yun is a fund analyst at Livingbridge. She did her MA(Hons) in Economics and Statistics at the University of Edinburgh and obtained her MSc in Economics from LSE with a concentration on Public Economics. Yun is in charge of coordinating social media and communications, and she is passionate about building up the WiE community. In her free time, she loves to spend her time exploring all that her current city (London) has to offer, from food to culture to nightlife. She has two main interest in Economics; one is around public economics and the being econometrics.
